Three Layers of Lone Worker Protection

Periodic Check-Ins

Configurable check-in timer (5–120 minutes). The worker confirms they are safe by pressing the PTT button or a dedicated check-in button. If the timer expires without a check-in, the system escalates immediately to all connected dispatchers.

Man-Down Detection

Continuous accelerometer monitoring detects tilt and fall events. If a device is horizontal beyond the configured threshold (configurable: 10–120 seconds), a man-down alarm is declared automatically — no button press required.

SOS Alarm

Hardware SOS button support on PTT radios (Hytera P50, P60, and compatible devices). One press triggers an immediate SOS alarm with device location to all dispatchers. Audible and visual alarm on the device until cancelled.

What Happens When an Alarm Fires

Immediate Dispatcher Alert

When a lone worker alarm triggers, DialogDispatcher responds instantly:

  • Audible alert tone on all dispatcher PCs
  • Pulsing coloured dot appears on live map at device location
  • Alarm panel shows worker name, alarm type, and elapsed time
  • Device location continues updating every 5 seconds during alarm
  • GPS trail records all movement from alarm trigger

Dispatcher can initiate a private PTT call to the worker directly from the alarm panel or map popup — no menu navigation required.

Alarm Resolution

Alarms are resolved in two ways:

Worker self-cancels: The device shows a "slide to cancel" control. The worker slides to confirm they are safe. The alarm clears on the device and on all dispatcher screens simultaneously.

Dispatcher cancels: The dispatcher can cancel an alarm remotely via an over-the-air command. The device stops alarming immediately. Used when the dispatcher has confirmed the worker is safe via voice PTT.

All alarm events (trigger, escalation, cancellation) are logged to the incident timeline with timestamps for post-incident review and PDF report generation.

Hardware Integration

Lone Worker on Hytera P50 & P60

Hytera P60 ROM Integration

On the Hytera P60, Dialog PTT connects directly to the device's firmware-level lone worker ROM service (`LoneWorkerManager`). This gives Dialog PTT access to the hardware's built-in lone worker circuitry, not just a software fallback.

  • ROM LoneWorkerManager — firmware-level check-in timer
  • ROM MandownManager — hardware tilt/fall sensor integration
  • Hidden-API exemptions applied at startup for full ROM access
  • Both ROM services confirmed operational on P60 firmware

Software Fallback for All Other Devices

On Android smartphones and non-Hytera radios, Dialog PTT uses a pure-software implementation:

  • Check-in timer: software countdown with push-to-talk cancel
  • Man-down: real-time accelerometer Z-axis tilt detection (Silero VAD pipeline)
  • SOS: volume button long-press or screen button (device-dependent)
  • PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK held during monitoring — works with screen off

The fallback works on any Android 8+ device. No specialist hardware required for basic lone worker protection.

Compliance

UK Lone Worker Regulations

Dialog PTT is designed for compliance with UK lone worker regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and BS 8484:2022 (the code of practice for lone worker device services).

Audit Trail

Every check-in, missed check-in, alarm, and cancellation is logged with a timestamp. Full PDF incident reports are exportable from the dispatcher for post-incident review or regulatory purposes.

Encrypted Communications

All PTT audio, GPS data, and alarm signals are AES-256-GCM encrypted end-to-end. The server relays ciphertext it cannot decrypt. GDPR-compliant data handling with self-hosted option for full data residency.

Verified Location

GPS positions are timestamped and cryptographically tied to the device session. Location cannot be spoofed from an outside source. Trail playback shows exactly where the worker was at every point.
